Abel Bowen produced some of the most popular and impressive engravings from the 19th-century. He is most known known for his woodcuts depicting American military history. First published in 1816, “The Naval Monument” displayed many of Bowen’s engravings of the American navy, ships, and battles. It also covers many captain reports and expeditions by famous officers such as Perry and Lawrence. This work is one of the key references of the War of 1812 and short war against Algiers.
According to Howes, this 1836 edition is a revised edition with additions not included in previous printings.
