Sir William Russell Flint ( Scottish 1880-1969) Princess Ida, Luncheon Scene, "If it be well, to pine and droop and mope to sigh, 'Oh Ida! Ida! ' all day long, then Prince Hilarion is very well. " 1908, from the opera Princess Ida, or Castle Adamant, by Gilbert and Sullivan, watercolor on Smith's Water Color Board, signed and dated lower right, matted and framed. 15 x 10 in, image size, 25.5 x 20 in. as framed.
Provenance: W.Russell Button Gallery, Chicago This image was used as the frontispiece to the book Savoy Operas, by W.S.Gilbert, with illustrations in color by Flint, published by George Bell & Sons, London, 1909.

Condition
Color is rich and bright, with visible pigment texture. Scattered foxing, especially in upper right quadrant and along left horizontal third of composition. Old remnant of mat in upper left margin. Foxing to board verso. Watercolor is on Smith's Water Color Board, inscribed verso in another hand "If it be well to droop and pine and mope" From Princess Ida, W.Russell Flint.
