Description
Manchester Kashan Carpet
Persia, ca. 1920
364 x 264 cm (11' 11" x 8' 8")
Condition: excellent
Warp: cotton, weft: cotton, pile: wool
From c. 1880 new markets were being sought for the wool from Antipodian sheep farms, which was admired in western luxury markets for its fineness and silk-like qualities.
This fact was not lost on Persian rug producers, who began to make large carpets with this material. Within the US market during the 1920s there was a huge growth in demand for carpets, and producers started to use Manchester wool in greater quantities in carpets with small all-over designs with pinkish-red grounds reflecting the current interior decorating taste of the day.
The qualities of these carpets vary, but this example in fine condition is of the highest quality in terms of weave and material produced in that period.
