Description
Cambodian Ganesh bust- likely 15thC or earlier, and no later than 16/17thC. Bronze is 6.5". Nine inches including the custom base. Very rare to find an early Cambodian bronze Ganesh of any size, but especially rare to find a relatively large one with such a good face and so much personality. Probably Post-Khmer, and made in the centuries just after the decline of the great Khmer empire. I've shown this to one expert who believed it to be a an actual Khmer period (12/13thC) piece, but I believe it would probably be heavier and have more detail to the casting if it were that early, though it is possible. It is a piece that makes people smile and want to touch it, and it is a piece that children are drawn to. Many Ganesh images have very little of a "face", as the large trunk eclipses the mouth and eyes. The sculptor of this piece managed to imbue this fellow with a warmth and character rarely found in a Ganesh bronze. A true personal favorite
