Description
This family of four cloth dolls, ranging in height from 7 ½” to 11 ½” tall (19 to 29 cm) were made by North Carolina dollmaker Ella Holder Doub (1892-1986). They have embroidered faces and yarn hair. Mrs. Doub dressed these dolls in meticulous detail representing the Sunday worship attire of a Moravian family of the late 1700s. The clothing appears to be mostly stitched by hand, including the button holes and the pintucks in mother and daughter’s petticoats. The women of the Moravian Church have a long history of making dolls to raise money for the church, and these dolls may have been made for that purpose. Absolutely amazing workmanship and a beautiful tribute to history!
