Description
This antique doll measures about 12” tall (30.5 cm) and was made by Rheinische Gummi und Celluloid-Fabrik in Germany in the early 20th century under the Schildkrot trade name, better known to collectors as “Turtle Mark.” She has brown glass stationary eyes. Her wig may be silk or rayon, and is ringed with curly floss trim. She has sturdy celluloid arms and a cloth body, and it feels like her lower legs are celluloid also. Her outfit includes a cotton dress , silk shawl with long fringe, cotton petticoat, cotton knit stockings and oilcloth shoes. Her clothing is not removable. She is marked GERMANY with a turtle in a diamond on the back of her shoulder plate. A woven label with the number 78 is sewn to her petticoat. A very unusual celluloid doll!
Condition
She has some wear to her facial features and could use a careful cleaning. Her silk shawl is deteriorating and the silk ribbon trim on the dress is mostly gone.
