Forshaw Day (Ontario Canada, 1837 - 1903)
James McNeill Whistler was three years old in 1837 when Forshaw Day was born in London. After studying architecture and design at the Royal Dublin Society and South Kensington Art Schools there, Day came to Halifax at age 25 to be a draftsman in H.M. Naval Yard from 1862-79, during which time he also made pictures and taught painting. Throughout the 70's and 80's Day exhibited at the Toronto Industrial Exhibition (later the Canadian National), entering the Philadelphia Centennia Expositionl in 1876 as well.
He became Professor of Freehand Drawing at Royal Military College, Kingston in 1879, the same year he was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists. And so, in his early 40's, a certain success visited Forshaw Day, especially in 1880 when he began a pattern, which was to continue almost a quarter of a century, of showing at the Royal Canadian Academy and becoming the only Nova Scotia artist founding member of the body.
He also exhibited for several years with the Montreal Association that, in time, became the Museum of Fine Arts. Day retired at age 60 from R.M.C.(Royal Museum of Canada) due to failing health, visiting Halifax again at the end of the century. He showed at the Canadian National Exhibition the year of his death, 1903, and died in Kingston the day after the summer began.
Over the years his paintings included "Spectacle Island, N.W. Arm", "Bear River, Digby Co.", and "Purcell's Cove." Day was a well known painter and teacher in the Canadian East Coast city of Halifax during the years between 1862-1879. He worked in the Naval Yards in Halifax and often went sketching on the Eastern Shore. There were Micmac Indian encampments on the Musquodoboit River, and he liked to paint these which he saw as a way of life which was being overrun by progress.
