Meno Muhlig (Germany, 1823 - 1873)
After training at the Dresden Academy under Julius Hubner to Meno Muhlig established as a landscape, history and genre painter in the circle of Dresdner late romantics, which also includes his brother Bernhard belonged. In our painting, the viewer witnesses a magical procession to the early hours attracts a lively crowd dwarf in a long train through a forest clearing on a hot lit cave with a dwarf forged over. In the background, the moon shines brightly through the branches, which provides a view on a remote castle with a single lighted window. Two musicians are progressing the hunting party, followed by two powerful gnomes bearing the triumphant hunters on their shoulders. It is close to the Waidmanner hunted prey, a mighty stag beetle on. The animated by numerous details from the flora and fauna night scene leads the viewer strangely in the realm of fairy tales and legends that Muhlig otherwise served as the model for his often miniature-like compositions.
