Description
10th-11th century AD. A bronze strap end with tongue-shaped plate formed as a symmetrical placement of voids, of Thomas's Type E2; upper edge pierced by two rivets, outer face with punched detailing to the edges of the voids. Cf. Thomas, G. Late Anglo-Saxon and Viking-Age Strap-Ends 750-1100, Part 2, London, 2004, items 25-6. 16.65 grams, 49.96mm (2"). Found Cumbria, UK. The design is derived from a motif of a central anthropomorph with raised arms against a foliate background.
