Pasteur Louis
Louis Pasteur Signed Artist's Proof Engraving
An engraving of renowned French scientist Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) by Louis Pierre Henriquel-Dupont (1797-1892), ca. 1884, pencil inscribed and signed by Pasteur as "Bon comme ton / L. Pasteur" [trans: "Good as [the] tone / L. Pasteur" along the bottom. The finely executed engraving depicts a bust portrait of the chemist at center surrounded by an attractive decorative border. Pasteur approved of the artist's proof, as indicated by his note endorsing the tone, or look, of the engraving. A slightly illegible oval rubber stamp beneath the image is dated June 27, 1884. Some extremely minor scattered foxing to the margins, otherwise very good. Overall size 10.25" x 13".
Louis Pasteur, a chemist and microbiologist, discovered that bacteria in liquids are destroyed by heating, a process thereafter called pasteurization in his honor. Pasteur also developed a vaccine for rabies. Beginning in 1880, he successfully inoculated animals for chicken cholera and anthrax and paved the way for mass immunizations.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
