Benito Juarez, Future Mexican President, LS as Governor of Oaxaca

1p document in Spanish signed by Benito Juarez (1806-1872), then Governor of Oaxaca and future president of Mexico, as "Benito Juarez" at center right. The signature appears above a fanciful "B" monogram/curlicue. Written in Oaxaca, Mexico, a region located about 400 km southeast of Mexico City, on January 1, 1852. Handwritten on cream paper bearing a printed letterhead of "Gobierno del Estado de Oaxaca" [trans: "Government of the State of Oaxaca"]. With expected paper folds, else near fine. Includes a transcription and translation from the Spanish. 8.325" x 12.25".

Translated in part:

"[handwritten] Your Excellency,

I have the honor to send along copies of the official newspaper of this government that are also published in the Capital. At the same time enjoying the satisfaction of offering your Excellency a reassurance of my appreciation, [I am]

God and Freedom, Oajaca [Oaxaca]

January 1, 1852

[signed] Benito Juarez".

Benito Juarez, a well-educated lawyer of indigenous origins, first embarked on his political career in the early 1830s. Juarez was the Governor of Oaxaca when he composed this letter. Its likely recipient was José Fernando Ramirez, the Minister of Internal and External Relations in the cabinet of Mexican President Mariano Arista (1802-1855). During Juarez's gubernatorial tenure, he invested in the local infrastructure, improving the port, roadways, government palace, and schools. Juarez served as President of Mexico between 1858-1872, during which time he weathered both civil discord and foreign invasion.
