Description
James Madison Scalloped-Top Ship's Passport Signed as president and countersigned by James Monroe as secretary of state. One partially printed vellum page, 10" x 14" (sight), Mississippi; February 5, 1817. Numbered "2," the passport allows "...the Ship Favourite of Boston... Ebenezer Foster master commander, of the burthen of two hundred and seventy four 33/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with eleven men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hindrance seizure or molestation." With maritime vignettes at the top of the document and paper seal at the lower left corner. Also countersigned by Beverly Chew, Collector of the state of Louisiana. Twenty-seven days after signing this ship's passport, James Monroe was sworn in as the fifth President of the United States. The document is matted and framed with lithographs of Madison and Monroe, along with an informative plaque, measuring 33.25" x 31.5" overall. Condition: Flattened folds with bold signatures.
