Description
Pope Paul IV (Giovanni Pietro Carafa di Capriglia Irpina; 1555-1559) medal, 1559; struck in bronze; by the medalist Federigo Parmensis (also known as Gianfederico Bonzagni, Federigo Parmigiano and Gian Federigo Bonzagna); 24.5mm, 11.15g: obverse depicts Jesus driving out merchants from the Great Temple ("Beit HaMikdash") of Jerusalem, with legend in Latin "DOMVS MEA DOM O" at base; reverse depicts bust of Paul IV facing right, wearing robe whose collar is decorated with figures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul; legend in Latin reads "PAVLVS IIII PONT MAX AN V", and under the shoulder appear the medalist's initial "I F P".
