FRANK TOWNSEND HUTCHENS (AMERICAN, 1869-1937) PORTRAIT OF A MAN, oil on artist's board, an Impressionist depiction of a seated figure wearing bright red sweater and wide-brimmed hat, likely a subject in New Mexico, signed lower right, remnants of old gallery / exhibition labels attached verso, and period pencil inscription, in the artist's hand, which reads, in part, "Al was a very humble man". Housed in likely original Arts & Crafts frame. Circa 1920. 34 1/2" x 20 1/2" sight, 43 1/2" x 29" OA.
Excellent condition. Frame with very minor wear.
Catalogue Note: Born in Canandaigua, New York, Frank Townsend Hutchens (1869-1937) studied at the Art Students League in New York City with George de Forest Brush, and at the Academie Colorassi in Paris with Augustus Saint Gaudens. During the latter part of his career, he spent a great deal of time at the Silvermine Art Colony in Taos, New Mexico, where the present portrait was likely executed.
