(JAMES FENIMORE COOPER) (1789-1851). American Author and Novelist of frontier adventure.
Handwritten, but not signed, by James Fenimore Cooper, Handwritten Notation, no date, 7.75" x 1.75", 1 page, no place, Fine. This notation is titled ""On Language." It reads, in full:



"Language, the fit attendant of reason, distinguishes man from all the other creatures of the earth. The faculty of speech is one of the highest gifts of nature, and it is important in proportion as learning, all truths, and the charities of life are of interest to human happiness."



Includes a 4" x 5.25", 2 page Letter from Mrs. R. Cooper, dated December 10, 1879, transmitting "a few lines of M.S. in Mr. Cooper's hand writing-a passage from a lecture on language delivered in this village nearly fifty years since." The fragment has two tears which have prior tape repairs on reverse. Both items are mounted to a 8" x 10.25" pink heavy card for display. (2 items).
James Fenimore Cooper, (born September 15, 1789, Burlington, New Jersey, U.S.; died September 14, 1851, Cooperstown, New York), first major American Novelist, Author of the novels of frontier adventure known as the Leatherstocking Tales, featuring the wilderness scout called Natty Bumppo, or Hawkeye. They include The Pioneers (1823), The Last of the Mohicans (1826), The Prairie (1827), The Pathfinder (1840), and The Deerslayer (1841).
