Rare, large and impressive French Red vase with incised and painted tulip decoration done in both mat and gloss glazes by (who else) Sara Sax in 1921. The French Red glaze is used with equally thick and enamel like green, orange and black all against a green mat ground which itself is covered with cross hatched patterns in two shades of green. Two concentric circles in black encircle the vase and vase at the shoulder and small rectangles in two tone green are contained within. The underside of the rim is done in the gloss black in peaks and valley which correspond with the mat green areas. Marks include the Rookwood logo, the date, shape number 2273 and. Miss Sara's incised monogram. Height is 17 7/8 inches. Uncrazed and very clean. Yes we like our French Red vases and this is certainly one of the largest and nicest to come to Humler & Nolan. We can only wonder at the quantity and amazing quality of Sara Sax' work in the early 1920s using this glaze. Only one other Rookwood artist seems to have chosen or been allowed to do so and that was Elizabeth Lincoln. We have a feeling Sax was well trusted and given wide latitude to make these amazing works because anything this large that blew up in the making would have been a tremendous loss to al of us.
