Description
Dimensions: 9-1/4" H x 5-1/8" Dia.

Chinese Ming Dynasty Zhengde blue and white immortals Meiping vase. The porcelain shaped into a traditional Meiping form, thick potted, with a narrow base, wide body, slender neck easing to form a petite opening with slight emerge ring line. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white underglaze base color which contrast against the cobalt blue fine design color. The main body adorned with relaxing Immortals on the sky admits scrolling ruyi clouds, above dense tree on the mountain landscape. The shoulder decorated with flowers blooms interspersed with cumulus clouds, enclosed with double fine blue rings lines. The upper neck adorned with upturning lappets, enclosed with double fine blue rings lines. The foot base rim festooned with auspicious motif, enclosed with double fine blue rings lines. The Eight Immortals are considered to be signs of prosperity and longevity, so they are popular themes in ancient and medieval art. They were frequent adornments on celadon vases. They were also common in sculptures owned by the nobility. They were often depicted either together in one group, or alone to give more homage to that specific immortal. This shows that early on, the Eight Immortals quickly became eminent figures of the Taoist religion and had great importance. We can see this importance is only heightened in the Ming and Qing dynasties. During these dynasties, the Eight Immortals were very frequently associated with other prominent spiritual deities in artwork. There are numerous paintings with them and the Three Stars ,the gods of longevity, prosperity, and good fortune together. Also, other deities of importance, such as the Queen Mother of the West, are commonly seen in the company of the Eight Immortals. The underside unglazed, revealed the pale-creme ground and dark grayish brown spotted firing marks and edge-cut foot rim. This inadvertently gave texture, energy, and shading to the design. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned.
Mark on under base, a six underglaze blue script characters reign mark, enclosed within double fine rings, Zhengde Reign Period of Great Ming Dynasty.
