Samuel Frederick Gray was an 18th-century British chemist who published a number of works on botany, pharmacology, and chemistry. One of Gray’s final works was a practical reference work entitled ‘The Operative Chemist’. This book was a treasure-trove of information on all aspects of chemistry – principles of furnace construction, behaviors of light and heat, electricity, experiments to study gravity, creating vacuums from steam, effects and properties of all kinds of acids, rare stones and gems, as well as notable sections on gold!
Gray even included chapters on making consumable items such as soap, tea, cheese and butter, breads, wine, beer, and other alcohols all from a chemical and experimental viewpoint.
This rare first French edition of Gray’s famous chemistry treatise was published in 1828 and features all four expected volumes, including the illustrated atlas tome!
