Scarce Slavery Broadside [Rhode Island] 1847

[Rhode Island], [Slavery]. Broadside "Electors of the Western District Read And Consider!!!" No publisher, 1847. Printed sheet 19" x 12.5". Early ink price and mathematical calculation on verso. Two small tape repairs to verso with slight bleed through from the ink notations to recto. Overall age even age toning.

Large 1947 broadside detailing events at a pre-election public meeting of the Rhode Island Whig party and arguing for the election of the anti-war, antislavery candidate, Hon. Wilkins Updike, to Congress.

This broadside offers selections from a public meeting of Rhode Island's Whig Party held at Kingston Court House on August 11, 1847. The issue of the day was a congressional election. This broadside shares selections from the speeches offered at the meeting, all of which argue in favor of the election of Hon. Wilkins Updike. To the Whigs, Updike's election would serve as a rebuke to the so-called 'southern policy", which advocated for slavery and the financially compromising Mexican War. The Hon. Wilkins Updike was a Rhode Island lawyer, as well as a prominent political figure and member of the Whig Party. As a public servant - in the Rhode Island State legislature (this Congressional bid failed)-Updike gained a reputation for his liberal-mindeness, including his support of public education, equal justice, and woman's rights.
