Description
9 x 6 1/4 in. (plate). Pencil signed. "The Clairborne Court, New Orleans". Eugene E. Loving arrived in New Orleans during the Great Depression, attracted to the exotic allure of bohemian life that thrived in the French Quarter during that time. A brilliant etcher, he helped revive an interest in the centuries-old form. While few biographical details of Loving remain known, he was a member of the New Orleans Arts and Crafts Club in the 1940s.After the medium had again become passé in the United States, he created numerous etchings on paper that benefit from the medium's spontaneity of line in showcasing his favorite subject: French Quarter architecture. Only occasionally do human forms grace his work.Source:"Eugene Loving", KnowLA: Encyclopedia of Louisiana, http://www.knowla.org/entry.php?rec=1301 (Accessed 3/31/2013; Written by staff of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities)
