Description
A very early carved brush of First Nations origin with a human face incised on the volute carved pommel. Intricately detailed with ergonomic thumb depressions, chevrons, zigzags, tree motif, C scrolls, etc. The bristled hide is affixed to the shaft with small wooden pegs with substantial shrinkage of the hide indicating an early date. Originally collected by Nettie Sharpe. Quebec, 18th century. Illustrated: Celebrating Canada, page 68-71. H: 13”. // Très ancienne brosse sculptée, probablement d’origine autochtone, tête humaine sculptée sur le pommeau décoré d’une volute. Elle arbore chevrons, zigzags, motifs d’arbres, volutes en C, etc. finement sculptés, peau garnie de poils retenue par de petites chevilles de bois dans le manche. La grande contraction de la peau indique que la canne est très ancienne. Ancienne collection de Nettie Sharpe. Québec, 18e siècle. L: 13po.
