Description
Michaux Map and Book related to State of Franklinia, 2 items total. 1st item: Map of the United States, Canada, & C, engraved by Smith and Jones, printed for Richard Phillips, London, 1805. From "Travels to the Westward of the Allegany Mountains" by Francois Andre Michaux. Copper plate engraving depicting the United States, Canada, and more, including "Morgania" (aka "New Madrid"), a colony established by Pennsylvanian George Morgan acting on behalf of the Spanish, who sought to consolidate their hold on the Mississippi. The map shows territories and states, including the State of Franklinia between North Carolina and Tennessee, borders including that between Maine and New Brunswick, towns, cities, roads, rivers, bodies of water, forts, and other areas of interest including the locations of Native Americans. Scale of miles, lower right. "Longitude West from London" lower left under image. Map surrounded by scale notations and line border. Encapsulated in plastic, matted, and housed under glass in a gilt wood frame. Sight - 16" H x 13 1/8" W. Framed - 27 3/8" H x 23 5/8" W. 2nd item: Travels to the Westward of the Allegany Mountains, in the States of the Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, in the Year 1802 by Francois Andre Michaux, 1805. Printed for Richard Phillips, London. Octavo, 96 pages, rebound in one quarter brown leather with brown cloth sides, gilt lettering to spine. 8 5/8" H x 5 3/8" W x 1/2" D. Both items early 19th century.
Condition
1st item: Overall good condition. 1 3/4" x 3/4" area of restoration to right center edge of map. Approximately 6 1/4" tear to lower right quadrant of map. David Lloyd Swift Paper Conservator label and additional information, en verso, suggesting it was cleaned, deacidified, and encapsulated (not laminated) in a plastic archival sleeve in October 1998. 2nd item: Covers with wear, rubbing, 2 1/2" area of separation to spine from binding, corners bumped. Pages toning, foxing spots, acid burn, etc to be expected from age. Does not include fold out map. Front end paper with approximately 2 7/8" tear, pencil inscription.
