Description
Eight (8) Woodblock Prints including Shin Hanga. 1st-2nd items: Tsuchiya Koitsu (Japanese, 1870-1949) Yotsuya Araki Yokocho and Teashop Kiyomizu from the Tokyo Fukei series, depicting women standing in and just outside a teahouse at night; color woodblock print on Doi watermarked laid paper, calligraphic inscriptions lower left above red circular seals, calligraphic marks at right lower margin, stamped marks at left margin. Black narrow wood frame and ivory colored mat. 14 1/4" x 9 3/8" image, 15 3/4" x 10 1/2" sheet. 18 5/8" x 13 5/8" frame. Circa 1957-1962. 3rd item: Hasui Kawase (Japanese, 1883-1957) Rain at Maekawa, color woodblock on laid paper, published by The S. Watanabe Color Print Co. with round Watanabe seal. Narrow black wood frame with ivory colored mat. 14 1/8" x 9 3/8" sight, 15 1/2" x 10 1/2" sheet. 19 3/4" x 13 3/8" frame. Circa 1946-1957. 4th-5th items: Japanese woodblock prints, one depicting two artists at work creating scroll paintings inside a house with landscape setting in the background, the other depicting workers making warrior's armor. Black narrow wood frames with beige colored mat. 11 1/4" x 7 1/4" sight, 17 3/8" x 13 3/8" framed. 6th-8th items: Small framed woodblock prints depicting figures in rain and snow, in bamboo style frames; each about 4" x 3" sight, 5 5/8" x 7 5/8" framed. Provenance: Acquired by U.S. military officer while serving in Asia third quarter 20th century.
Condition
1st-2nd items: Overall excellent condition. Mats toned with some tears, abrasions to frame. 3rd item: Overall toning; two small pale spots, largest 1/2", along left margin; tape at top and bottom. Mat toned with some tears, abrasions to frame. 4th-5th items: Overall toning, not examined out of frame. 6th-8th items: Very good condition, not examined out of frame.
