Description
This wonderful titlepage/frontispiece appeared in Cellarius' celestial atlas in 1660 and was used again for Valk & Schenk's re-issue of the work in 1708.The page shows ancient and then contemporary astronomers surrounding Urania, the muse of Astronomy. The figures believed to include Tycho Brahe, Nicolaus Copernicus, Claudius Ptolemaeus, and Philip Lansberg amongst others. The upper portion depicts the heavens with putti, the sun, moon and other celestial representations. The plate is signed at the bottom by F H van den Hoven.
