FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED TO THE AUTHOR'S COUSIN on front blank, "A Esther y a Enrique, fraternalmente, Georgie." Esther Haedo, Borges's cousin, was married to the Uruguayan writer Enrique Amorim. Borges spent the summer of 1934 in Amorim's ranch "Las nubes," in northern Uruguay, a rough area on the border with Brazil. In a nearby town, Borges witnessed a tavern shooting, an act that would mold his image of the desperadoes who inhabit his narratives. The Amorim's estancia waould also provide inspiration as Borges was able to witness the guacho life up close. An inscribed copy of Borges best known and most influential collection, with significant family association. Such copies are scarce in commerce.
