Description
BORGES, Jorge Luis and Adolfo Bioy Casares. Los Mejores Cuentos Policiales.Buenos Aires: Emecé Editores, S.A., [1943]. Original printed white wrappers; custom black folding box. Condition: spine lightly faded, a little rubbing to wrapper edges. FIRST EDITION, WITH NUMEROUS HOLOGRAPH CORRECTIONS BY BORGES, for the second edition. This key anthology, one on which Borges and Bioy Casares, two great enthusiasts of the crime story, labored, discussed and revised over a period of many years. The vast majority of the selections are from the long Anglo-American tradition of the genre, but Simenon and Apollinaire are represented as well as a number of Latin American authors, including Borges himself, whose Death and the Compass constitutes the final story in the collection. Several of the stories, particularly the Conan Doyle and Jack London entries are quite heavily re-worked, with hundreds of corrections in Borges's hand throughout. A wonderful glimpse into the working methods of Borges as translator, a role in which he would work indefatigably for most of his literary life, and in a genre, crime fiction that was so key to Borges' own works.
