Description
This lot consists of a framed gouache painting on paper, rendered in the abstract figural style of Bernard Buffet (French, 1928-1999). A hand-painted inscription at top of image reads, "Bernard Buffet". This piece features a great horned owl painted in earthy tones of brown and red. The owl's honey-orange eyes peer back at the viewer with steady might. The piece, rich with color and line, is recognizably Expressionist. This handsome painting would be a highlight to any collection of modern art. Overall measures approximately 22.75" x 21.5"; image sight measures approximately 12" x 11".
Bernard Buffet (French, 1928-1999) was born in Paris, France, where he made a formal study of painting and, by 1946, had firmly established himself as an art-world fixture. His first retrospective exhibit was presented when Buffet was just 30 years old. In his lifetime, Buffet created some 8,000 paintings and countless fine art prints, which were a massive testament to the pure artistry that drove the man.
