Description
This lot consists of a sizable oil painting on board, done in the rich and gestural style of Hans Purrmann (German, 1880-1966). This sensitive still life encapsulates the vibrancy of a fresh-picked floral bouquet. Warmth exudes from the reds and oranges applied. A small, hand-painted inscription at lower left reads, "H. Purrmann". Thick brush strokes and bold outlining define the charm of this painting. Any collection would be complemented with the addition of this handsome piece. Overall measures approximately 19.5" x 13.75".
Hans Purrmann (German, 1880-1966) was born and raised in Speyer. His professional artistic career was initiated by work in set design and interior decorating. From Karlsruhe, Purrmann continued to Munich, and then to Paris, where he met and formed a closely collaborative relationship with Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). The pair would eventually establish a school of art before Purrmann's career drew him onward - to cities like Berlin, Florence, and, ultimately, Basel. Purrmann's vibrant landscapes, still lives, and portraits are a vibrant testament to his inimitable sensibilities and enduring talent.
