Description
This sixth plate daguerreotype has much going for it:
1) Flip top case in top condition.
2) Fine early portrait.
3) Visually exciting painted backdrop.
4) Signed in the image, lower left appears to say "By Van Loan." ("By Van L an" is what we see.) According to Directory of Pennsylvania Photographers 1839-1900, by Linda A Ries and Jay W. Ruby, Samuel Van Loan was in operation from 1844 - 1856. It would seem that this daguerreotype would push the earlier date back by a year or two. Full case in fine condition.
According to the consignor, the subject of this daguerreotype is Reasin Beall, a politician and military officer who has an extensive Wikipedia biography. The identification was from an old note no longer attached, but the consignor provided a scan of it.
An auction viewer has provided these new insights: Given the [date of the daguerreotype] this is presumably by Matthew D. Van Loan (1794-1856), an important early NYC daguerreian who succeeded A.S. Wolcott in 1841 in the Granite Building on Broadway; he was the father of Samuel P. Van Loan (1823-1900), who began with Mayall in Philadelphia ca. 1845.
The backdrop shown in this dag appears to be at least after the style of Thomas Cole (1801- 1848), with strong ties to the style of his famous "Voyage of Life" series; Cole and Van Loan knew each other as both were long-time residents of Catskill, NY. The unidentified portrait is not Cole, but may be a member of his family or his artistic circle.
