Pair of American Classical Carved and Stenciled Mahogany Pier Tables , c. 1830, Philadelphia, carrara marble top, cove-molded frieze, robustly scrolled supports mounted with silk-covered ornaments, mirrored back, gadrooned base, anthemion paw feet , h. 37 in., w. 44 in., d. 20 3/4 in. Note: The sophisticated pier tables offered here are closely related to a similar pier table, also one of a pair, made by Philadelphia cabinetmaker Anthony G. Quervelle, illustrated in Robert C. Smith’s article on Quervelle in The Magazine Antiques. Featuring a similarly shaped frieze and elegant gilt stenciling, the illustrated pier table has nearly identical exaggerated scrolled supports as the pair in the present lot.
