The treatment of the trees and people as well as the bright tone are indicative of the period toward the end of Blakelock's life when he was hospitalized at Middletown Homeopathic Hospital in Middletown, New York. Anna Clarence Siegel began visiting Blakelock at the hospital in 1916, as noted in: Vincent, Glyn, The Unknown Night: The Genius and Madness of R. A. Blakelock, an American Painter, Grove Press, 2003, p. 265.
