Description
20th Century Art Deco enamel and stone-set vanity case, of square form, with chased Indo-Persian design throughout depicting various exotic birds and other exotic animals among a scrolling foliage ground, with polychrome enamel detailing on both sides, the cover is set with an oval turquoise thumb piece and large ruby, opening to reveal the original mirror and the powder compartment . The case is signed "Cartier", and numbered what appears to be 2302. The case has some tarnishing and we will leave it original. Measures 6" X 4 1/2". Similar sold at Christies many years ago for $10000 English Pounds This type of enameled brass vanity cases decorated with Indo-Islamic patterns are extremely rare and valuable, typical of the Art Deco pieces made and retailed by Cartier in the 1920-30's, often influenced by a strong exotic taste for Oriental, Middle Eastern and Indian art and jewelry.
