Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino Complex, ca. 1000 to 1250 CE. A hand-modeled statue of a male coca chewer, sitting upon a bench with his right hand placed upon his right knee and his left hand on the bench, wearing a sash and loin cloth which are both beautifully decorated in black-on-red negative resist, the sash further embellished with incised striations. The figure presents an oversized head with almond-shaped eyes delineated in low relief, a pointed nose in high relief, a bulge from the coca wad in his right cheek, and pursed lips - all topped by a cap-like coiffure. Size: 6.25" H (15.9 cm)
