Description
A set of ten Japanese lacquer soup / dessert bowls, made by Kisai of Kyoto, c.1800 / early 19th century. Comprised of ten covered / lidded bowls + one additional lid. Each with olive-green lacquer ground and decorated in gold takamaki-e with a flowering plum tree. Based on an original Korin - inspired design and extending over both sections, with gilt lacquered rims. The accompanying inscribed wooden box signed and sealed Kisai. Each bowl measuring 5-3/8" diameter, 3.5" high to top of lid. The box measures 12.5" wide, 6.5" deep, 9" high.
PROVENANCE: Ex. collection of General Joseph Warren Stilwell (1883-1946) via his grandson, son of Winifred Stilwell Cox (daughter of General Stilwell).
