A SQUARE KASHMIRI SHAWL
India, late 19th century
Twill tapestry-woven in brightly-coloured wools, predominantly in reds, the two concentric squares invisibly mended together, the outer in reds and the inner in black, containing a continuous symmetrical pattern of elongated buti and floral palmettes converging in a circle invaded by four arched flower-heads, the harlequin borders entirely embroidered on fine pashmina patches, 190cm x 184cm.
