Oliver Wendell Holmes Signed & Dated Autograph Poem
OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES Sr. (1809-1894). American Physician, Professor, Lecturer, and Author, member of the "Fireside Poets," one of his most famous works, "Old Ironsides," was published in 1830.
December 29th, 1887-Dated, Autographed Poem Stanza Signed in full and Dated, "Oliver Wendell Holmes, Boston, December 29th, 1887", 1 page, measuring 4-5/8" x 4-5/8", Choice Very Fine. Beautifully written with a strong signature, housed in a lovely custom red morocco folding case with gilt ruled borders and titled "OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES - Autograph Poem." This Handwritten Poem Stanza penned in rich brown ink having four lines on clean light tan wove period paper mounted by its corners onto a heavier stock for display. This poem titled "A Rhymed Lesson" (Urania), was originally delivered by Holmes before the Boston Mercantile Library Association, October 14, 1846. This wonderful presented Poem stanza reads, in full:
"Think not too meanly of thy low estate; / Thou has a choice; to choose is to create! / Remember whose the sacred lips that tell / Angels approve thee when thy choice is well! / 1846.
Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809 " 1894) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. A member of the "Fireside Poets," he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858). He was also an important medical reformer. In addition to his work as an author and poet, Holmes also served as a physician, professor, lecturer and inventor and, although he never practiced it, he received formal training in law.
