According to a portfolio I have of William Walton's work for which I don't have a date, but probably around 1960.

Until recent years, painting has occupied only a part of William Walton's time. Born in Jacksonville, Illinois in 1909, the son of a newspaper editor, he was graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Journalism. He worked as a staff writer for various newspapers and magazines: The Associated Press (NY Cable Desk); Time Magazine (in Europe); Life Magazine (as foreign news editor); and the New Republic (Washington Bureau Chief).

In 1949 Walton turned from writing to painting, which he had done sporadically throughout this journalistic career. His total formal art training consisted of a year in a college art class and a month of criticism with Karl Knaths in 1950. During this time he applied himself chiefly to acquiring technical knowledge and searching for forms in nature and architecture which particularly appealed to him as a form of expression. Summers spent on Cape Cod and a trip to the Caribbean have provided inspiration for the majority of his work.

He showed much of his work at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C., and was Commissioner of Fine Arts for the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations. He was also given honorary membership to the AIA for his work in historic preservation in D.C., including Lafayette Square. His papers are archived at the JFK Library and Museum in Boston.
