Title: An historical disquisition concerning The Knowledge which the Ancients had of India; and the Progress of Trade with that Country prior to the Discovery of he Passage to it by the Cape of Good Hope. With an Appendix containing Observations on the Civil Policy ‐ the Laws and Judicial Proceedings ‐ the Arts ‐ the Sciences ‐ and Religious Institutions of the Indains.
Author: William Robertson ‐ Rev William Robertson, was a Scottish historian, minister in the Church of Scotland, and Principal of the University of Edinburgh. ″The thirty years during which [he] presided over the University perhaps represent the highest point in its history.″ He made significant contributions to the writing of Scottish history and the history of Spain and Spanish America. He was Chaplain of Stirling Castle and one of the King′s Chaplains in Scotland.

Book Details: This handsome volume is housed in full leather with cat′s paw decoration, a paper spine label and tooled gilt bands to the spine. This is the Irish printing of the first edition, published the same year as the London release. The work is enhanced by two large folding copperplate engraved maps, each showing the entire southeast part of Asia. The half‐title page is present.

This work presents a thorough discussion of the history of India, dating back to ancient times, along with the evolution of trade and travel from Britain. The main text is followed by lengthy Appendix which discusses the civil policy, laws, judicial proceedings, arts, sciences and religious institutions of the country.

Condition / Notes: This attractive volume shows beautifully with some external shelf wear, concentrated at the extremities. The binding is sound and the pages are generally clean and bright, with a small amount of scattered toxing/toning/offsetting. The maps are in intact, excellent condition. There is a period owner′s name written in fountain pen at the top of the title page and the last name is repeated on the front paste‐down endpaper.
