Item Details
Description
Late 9th-early 10th century AD. A large bronze strap end with lozengiform body and terminal lobe; split at the upper end to accomodate two fastening rivets; the body decorated with concentric lines of punched decoration: pellet, triangle, ring-and-dot and a central guilloche. Cf. West, S. A Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Finds From Suffolk, item 55.7 from Icklingham; and Hawkes & Dunning Soldiers and Settlers in Britain, Fourth to Fifth Century. 11 grams, 57mm (2 1/4"). Found Yorkshire, UK, in 1998. Strap ends of a similar type are associated with the early Anglian settlement, derived from Late Roman amphora-type belt-fittings.
