Description
1st-2nd century AD. A bronze bowl with faint boss to the centre, surrounded by a band of petals; to the inner walls, three bands of zoomorphic friezes in light repoussé with inscribed detail comprising: lower band of birds with raised wings; middle band with a galloping camel, leopards, gazelle and intersecting plants; upper band with horse and rider, leopards, camel with herder, ibex, oryx; possibly later inscription in Himerite script above oryx and leopard; pierced once to the rim. 285 grams, 17cm (6 3/4"). Property of a Mayfair lady; formerly in an important London collection formed since 1965.
