Description
4th century AD. A large limestone monumental frieze or sculpture fragment depicting an advancing animal (gryphon?) supporting three figures on its flank: the first Dionysos in a knee-length robe, boots and a cap; next to him Ariadne in floor-length gown with dressed hair and diadem; the third figure is a deity holding a wreath or ring above Ariadne's head and bearing a frond in her left hand; mounted on a custom-made stand. 22.5 kg total, 35cm including stand (13 3/4"). From an old Tokyo collection; previously the property of a Japanese gentleman since the late 1960s. [No Reserve]
