SOUTH AFRICA TRAVELOGUE * African Expedition * Hottentots * Bushmen * Slave Trade * Illustrated
JOURNAL OF TRAVELS IN SOUTH AFRICA; Among the Hottentot and Other Tribes; in the years 1812, 1813, and 1814. By John Campbell. 1837. Published by Religious Tract Society, London. 228 pages, Illustrated
An account of a trip undertaken by John Campbell at the request of the Missionary Society which first published the book upon his return to London in 1815. He set off from Cape Town in February 1813, calling at Bethelsdorp and Grahamstown, then the military headquarters. Heading north he journeyed through the Snewburg and "Bushmen's Country" and visited Graaff-Reinet and Klaarwater before traveling further north to Litakun. His return trip went via Klaarwater, Pella and the Kamiesberge, arriving in Cape Town at the end of October. There is an interesting account of a chief and his people, with some notes on the Wankentzens, an adjoining tribe who, seven years before had massacred Dr. Cowan and a party of over twenty Europeans.
