A CINNABAR AND GILT LACQUER SHIBAYAMA INLAID SIGNED LACQUER COSMETIC/JEWELRY BOX, JAPANESE, LATE MEIJI (1868-1912)/TAISHO (1912-1926), the whole of trefoil form; the lid centering a scene inlaid with mother-of-pearl, of two sparrows in flight under wisteria blossoms, in a gilt landscape, signed in plaque L/R, the reserve within a repeating motif of squares and Greek key edge, over a base with relief carved reserves of chrysanthemum blooms and oak leaves within like repeating motifs. Height: 3 1/4" Width: 6 1/2" Depth: 5 3/4"

A large crack on base and lid, mild chips, losses, mild cracking, some losses of inlay, but overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
