"Len Gibbs (Leonard James Gibbs) was born in Cranbrook B.C. in 1929, and lives in Victoria. Len was a commercial artist and became the Creative director for the James Lovick Advertising agency in Edmonton, Alberta. During those years he continued to pursue his fine art career and his paintings steadily gained such acceptance that at the age of 39 he left the business world to devote his full time to painting.
In November 1968, Len Gibbs had his first solo exhibition at the Alex Fraser Gallery in Vancouver that sold out in the first day. Len has exhibited in Europe, Canada and the USA. Subsequent Exhibitions in 1986 and 1987 were successful. In 1983, Len was named an honorary citizen of in recognition of his contribution to the visual arts in Alberta, and in 198, he was named Honorary Citizen of Victoria.
Len specializes in acrylic medium. He is known for his ability to merge fine arts with impeccable detail and for his paintings of children, cowboys and marine subjects.
His painting are built carefully, first with sketches and preliminary watercolours to establish the composition. He then builds the painting slowly, with thin brush strokes and coloured glazes to bring out texture and colour. In his scenes the human form has always been the emphasis of his work, but the artist chief concern is the creation of mood and emotion."
