Description
**Originally Listed At $800**
Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 18th century CE. A haunting oil on canvas retablo depicting a 3/4 view of Christ carrying the cross. Jesus wears jewel tone blue and red robes and the Crown of Thorns. Blood drips from the alabaster complexioned skin of his face, neck, and hands. Rather than a narrative of the Way to Calvary that includes other figures and a recognizable setting, this is a devotional painting with dramatic pathos and intense emotion. We see a suffering Savior weathered by the weight of the Cross, but with an upward gaze suggestive of his salvation. Framed in a handsomely carved and gilded frame with gold leaf beautifully complimenting the red pigment which poignantly mirrors the crimson blood dripping from Christ's body. Size: 16.125" L x 11.75" W (41 cm x 29.8 cm); 21.25" L x 16.75" W (54 cm x 42.5 cm) framed.
Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection

Craquelure throughout. Painting shows wear commensurate with age, but the details are still quite vivid. Canvas has been relined. Age wear to frame with some loss to gilding as shown, though much remains. Inner section of framing was likely added later.
