Description
**First Time At Auction**
Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop and expanded circular terminals. Each recessed cavity - on the arms, terminals, and center of both the obverse and reverse sides - displays remnants of the original yellow enameled adornments; the five circular areas are representative of the five wounds Christ suffered during the Crucifixion. This style is often referred to as a “Viking cross,” because they are often found in ancient Viking village sites and burial mounds due to the indigenous peoples’ gradual conversion to Christianity. The bronze surfaces have developed a beautiful verdant green patina with some areas of dark green patina as well. Size: 1.3" W x 1.5" H (3.3 cm x 3.8 cm).
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
