Item Details
Description
Glass tray with metal frame featuring an image of the SS Normandie, with writing on the bottom edge of the image reading "Saint Nazaire." Some pieces of the deep blue glass surrounding the scene of the ship at sea have fallen away, but the scene has remained intact. Signed at bottom left "ELD."

Dimensions: 9" tall x 18.25" long

The Normandie was a French Line (La Campagnie Generale Transatlantique) ocean liner conceived in 1928 and set on her maiden voyage from Le Harve to New York on May 29, 1935. Setting the record straight for five years, she was the largest ship in the world, the first liner to exceed 1,000 feet in length, and weigh more than 70,000 tons. The interior was luxuriously decorated with the trendiest Art Deco style and she was outfitted with one of the earliest radar sets ever used to improve the safety of passengers. On February 9, 1950, at Pier 88 in New York City the lavish ocean liner was converted into a troopship.
