Description
D-140 Composite French "short sword" using a Model 1831 Infantry brass handled sword and a rare pre-Napoleonic "Kadetten der Ecole de Mars" scabbard. The brass grip is well worn as is the 1 1/2" wide blade, which was cut down to fit the scabbard. Alteration was probably done for a European opera company's prop room - to be used in Roman period productions. The iron scabbard has a kidney-shaped brass tip with relief valutes. Originally the scabbard has a brass frame with a cut-out area between the throat and center band, as well as a panel with valutes above the tip. The red fabric covering is also missing. A brass round stud has been applied to allow for suspension for a frog. Although incomplete, this scabbard would be a worthwhile addition to a Napoleonic collection. Scarce. II-
