Description
1940s handmade African American quilt. Top with block squares in creams, pinks, browns, and oranges. Back and border in yellow. Machine sewn. Not quilted. PROVENANCE: Made by Lee Velma Lewis Thames (1915-2001) of Collinsville, Mississippi. Mrs. Thames raised twelve children on a farm, growing her own cotton to make the family clothing. She relocated to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1962 after her husband's death to be closer to her grown children. 77" x 55". Some bleeding and seams torn.
