Carl Linnaeus DS Relating to Uppsala University

Document signed by Swedish taxonomist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) as "Carl Linnaeus" at lower right, next to an embossed red wax seal. The receipt is displayed beneath an engraved portrait of the celebrated scientist after an original 1775 oil painting by Alexander Roslin, showing the botanist in an elaborate pigtailed wig. Expected light paper folds, else near fine. Matted and framed behind UV-ray filtering Plexiglas within an antiqued gilt frame with peach and claret matting. Not examined out of frame. The document sight size is 6.375" x 2.375" while the overall frame size is 12" x 14" x .75".

Consisting of three lines of text in Swedish relating to Linnaeus's employment at Uppsala University. In part: "…for the year [17]56 I have received four hundred seventy three dollars in silver coin to my credit…"

Carl Linnaeus attended Uppsala University as a student before teaching there after 1730. Linnaeus was appointed rector at the university after two decades of teaching, conducting original field research, and producing a number of influential publications. He also became the chair of botany at Uppsala. Linnaeus's outdoor classes were extremely popular and he had an easy rapport with his adoring students. Uppsala University, located in the eponymous city located some 70 km northwest of Stockholm, is Sweden's oldest university, established in 1477.

Linnaeus's greatest contribution to science was developing a classification system for animals, plants, and minerals; his 1735 Systema Naturae introduced its principal ideas. Linnaeus is thus known as the "father of modern taxonomy."
